Free Train-the-Trainer Class for START to be offered at SWTA Annual Conference

Train-the-Trainer Class for START to be offered at SWTA Annual Conference:

start trainingMany of you may remember one of the earliest National RTAP training modules called Special Transit and Rural Transit Safety (STARTS).  When it came out in 1988, it was a very unique training course for its time.  It was one of the very first defensive and safe driving classes targeted to rural and small community transportation providers.  The original course consisted of three parts – Vehicle Safety Inspection, Passenger Relations & Driver Sensitivity and Defensive & Safe Driving Procedures.  For many years, it was one of the most popular training classes that National RTAP produced.  Over time, the video visuals became dated and the pace of the course seemed plodding.  The information was still relevant, but the method of delivery was behind the times.

Last year, National RTAP unveiled a new module developed to replace STARTS.  It is called Safety Training and Rural Transit (START).  The module is now available in two formats – computer-based and instructor-led.  The new course also has three sections – Vehicle Safety, Driver Safety and Passenger Safety.  It is presented as “basic training for rural transit drivers.”  The training module has a great deal of flexibility.  It can be delivered one-on-one or in a classroom style.  The course could be as short or lengthy as the trainer has time to present (from a few hours to three days).  There are discussion questions, sample forms, hands-on exercises and knowledge review exams.  Each participant will receive a “Learner’s Guide” that functions as a resource for the driver once the class is completed.  All these features are offered in a single DVD.
