SWTA’s Community Mobility Workshop - Provides a forum for public transit providers to meet with peers and exchange ideas about how to provide the best mobility options for their communities.

Bonus Training: Drug & Alcohol Regulations - As an addition to our regular programming, we are providing an entire day on Drug & Alcohol Regulations. Robbie Sarles, RLS & Associates is the leading expert on this topic for Public Transportation

This session will include an overview of the new DOT drug and alcohol testing program regulation changes with an emphasis on the expansion of the Opioid panel to include four commonly prescribed pain medications. The intended and unintended consequences of the rule change and the practical implications for transit systems will be discussed. The presentation will also address the impact of medicinal and recreational marijuana use laws and other current drug related issues challenging transit systems.

Audience: All public transportation providers, non-profit and social service agencies, dialysis center professionals, clinic schedulers and social workers.

Option B: NTI Procurement for Small and Medium Systems

Monday & Tuesday, July 23-24, 2018

This course provides an overview of transit procurement, emphasizing “best practices” for contract procurements by small and medium transit systems who are recipients of FTA funding. The course provides participants with a framework for examining basic issues pertaining to third-party contracting and introduces minimum standards for individual agency practices as described in the FTA Circular 4220.1F and other relevant federal guidance documents. Specific problem areas that may emerge during the procurement process will be identified and addressed. Circular 4220.1F is referenced throughout the course.

Audience: This course is geared toward small and medium transit system administrative staff who are involved with third-party procurement and are recipients of FTA funding. State agency representatives, and FTA regional staff will also benefit from this course. Attendance is limited to those transit agencies that:
- are recipients of 5307 funds and operate less than 50 vehicles
- are recipients of 5310 or 5311 funds

Option C: SWTA Transit Supervisor Certification Course #1

I’ve Been Promoted, Now What? How to Be an Effective Transit Supervisor

So, you have recently been promoted to the position of supervisor at your transit system. Your promotion was based largely on your technical skills as a vehicle operator, dispatcher, scheduler, planner, marketing assistant, safety specialist or mechanic. Were you given training in the art of managing and leading people? You probably discovered soon after being named as a supervisor that it was more about relationships and less about technical skills. Today’s transit supervisors and managers are in a paradigm shift where interpersonal and relationship building skills are more necessary that knowing transit.

This two-day session will address the need for leadership and its inherent dependence on relationship skills to get the jobs done through technical skills - even operating a transit vehicle safely and with a focus on the customer.

Audience: New Supervisors or those who want to brush up on their supervisory skills from the areas of vehicle operator, dispatcher, scheduler, planner, marketing assistant, safety specialist or mechanic.

OPTION D: Transit Law Seminar (CLE’s Available)

Legal professional development topics will highlight the most recent information in civil rights, transit safety, First Amendment, and labor issues, as well as developing regulatory and legislative matters that will impact transit systems and their legal departments.Continuing legal education credits (CLE’s) will be available.

Audience: Those associated with legal counsel and decision making for public transportation agencies including City Attorneys, in-house Counsel, contracted Counsel, CEO’s, GM’s, Directors, Management Staff and Transit Board Members.

Wednesday & Thursday, July 25-26, 2018

Come join us for an in-depth transit marketing and communications workshop spanning all aspects of public transportation, highlighting best practices in the industry. You are sure to sharpen your skills in media relations, storytelling, customer service and social media. Huddle groups for entry-level and veteran transit professionals will be offered.

Audience: Marketing professionals, Public Information Officers, Transit Directors, Customer Service specialists and those who are tasked with telling transit’s story.

OPTION F: Maintenance Certification Workshop

Wednesday & Thursday, July 25-26, 2018

New Shops, Senior Level Technicians and those managing maintenance service vendor contracts will benefit from a ground floor introduction to fleet maintenance management technology and the many regulations concerning their fleet.

Included in this 2-day maintenance course are
· Discussions covering the six cost centers of fleet management.
· Review of contractor service quality.
· How to calculate fleet maintenance costs.
· Innovations in side impact, mirrorless buses, rollover, and use of hurricane glass
· And our yearly projections about the new technologies and standards aimed at the small and midsize buses.

Our classes have been presented to public and private fleets, manufacturers, line assemblers, and federal agencies in 46 states. Inspectors from such agencies as NYDOT, Florida DOT, Tennessee DPS, Arizona DPS, and the United States New Bus Testing Center at Pennsylvania State have attended. Certification will be provided upon completion of the class.

Audience: This special program is targeted at Senior Level Technicians who are graduating out of their toolboxes to front-line management of a regulated bus fleet. It is also targeted for New Shops and those managing Maintenance Service Vendor Contracts.
