Brownsville, McAllen, South Padre Island

Valley residents will have more transit options available beginning this fall when Metro Connect begins service, providing express transit between Brownsville, South Padre Island, the University of

Texas-Pan American and McAllen.

The city of Brownsville will receive a $1.4 million grant for the project, which is enough to acquire four buses and pay the operating expenses for the three bus lines for a full year. The local match for the grant, however, was fronted by Brownsville, McAllen and South Padre Island, which Elizabeth Suarez, McAllen’s transit director, said signals that this project is a true team effort. ”It feels really satisfying that the three communities have been able to come together,” she said. “We’ve been able to put our money together and that’s the real success story.”
