WASHINGTON, D.C. — South West Transit Association (SWTA) honored Congressman Marc Veasey (D-TX) with the organization’s 2018 Legislator of the Year Award. Even on a wet, dreary morning more than 75 transit leaders from across SWTA’s eight-state region braved the cold to attend the ceremony and breakfast.

Congressman Marc Veasey was honored for his support of critical transit funding that has increased mobility and reduced congestion for DFW residents. Gary Thomas, President/Executive Director, Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) and Kristen Joyner, Executive Director, South West Transit Association presented the award to the representative. Congressman Marc Veasey represents Texas’s 33rd Congressional District that stretches from the outskirts of downtown Fort Worth to the borders of downtown Dallas.

Gary Thomas said, “Representative Veasey is a passionate and effective advocate for transit. Congressman Veasey initiated the Congress on Your Commute initiative which is like a rolling town hall. Congressman Veasey makes himself available to daily commuters on transit buses and trains so he may openly listen to his constituents about prominent issues that affect their daily lives. We are pleased to recognize him for his commitment to moving SWTA Nation forward.”

In 2017, Congressman Veasey supported several federal initiatives that provided essential funding for critically needed transit projects, such as the Trinity Metro’s TEXRail project and DART’s Red and Blue Line Platform Extensions project. The 27-mile TEXRail commuter rail project will connect downtown Fort Worth to DFW Airport’s Terminal B and will increase mobility for thousands of DFW residents to get to work, school, and other modes of travel. DART’s Red/Blue Line Platform Extensions project will modify platforms at 28 stations along the Red and Blue light rail lines to accommodate 3-car trains. The modifications will reduce passenger congestion on light rail trains by at least 12 percent and increase the carrying capacity of DART’s entire transit network by 33 percent.

Trinity Metro President/CEO Paul Ballard credits Congressman Veasey for his ongoing support of public transportation. “Congressman Veasey has been a strong supporter of public transportation over the years, and we appreciate his efforts on our behalf. Thanks to the full funding grant agreement from the Federal Transit Administration, we have all of the funding in place for TEXRail, which will be completed by the end of this year. Perhaps next year he can have one of his rolling town halls on TEXRail! We congratulate him on this well-deserved honor, and we look forward to continuing to work with him and our other elected officials for more success stories in public transportation.”

In 2016, Congressman Veasey began the “Congress on Your Commute” initiative which is like a rolling town hall. Congressman Veasey makes himself available to daily commuters on transit buses and trains so he may openly listen to his constituents about prominent issues that affect their daily lives.

The SWTA Legislator of the Year award is bestowed upon a member of the House of Representatives or the Senate who has significantly advanced the interests of public transportation in the previous year. SWTA members have been meeting for the Annual Bullfeathers Breakfast at Bullfeathers, DC, for the last 35 years to present the award.

SWTA is a regional association representing the interests of transit agencies and related organizations in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. The association provides a variety of training seminars and networking opportunities for transit industry employees, as well as an eight-state annual conference and trade show.
