Senate Passes Technical Corrections Bill

Earlier this afternoon, the Senate passed its version of the SAFETEA LU Technical Corrections bill 88-2.

The Senate rejected an amendment by Sen. Coburn (R-OK) that would have established a joint Congressional committee to investigate the earmarked Coconut Road project in Florida. The Senate did agree to an amendment by Senator Boxer (D-CA) calling on the Department of Justice “to review allegations of impropriety” regarding the project.

The bill now goes back to the House of Representatives for their consideration where they will either accept the amended version of HR 1195 or strike the provision calling for the Justice Department investigation and return the bill back to the Senate. Any “ping-pong” back to the Senate could spell trouble for final agreement.

Senator John Kyl (R-AZ) withdrew the amendment he offered with Senator John McCain (R-AZ) to suspend the motor fuel tax.
