The South West Transit Association (SWTA) announces the hiring of Alexandra Aitken as its Communications Specialist. Ms. Aitken, in addition to her new duties with SWTA in conducting outreach with its members and transit industry at large, will continue her primary role in the Communications Department at the Capital Area Transit System (CATS), a SWTA member agency serving Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She brings extensive experience in communications tools and strategies, developing and managing marketing campaigns, social media and public relations, as well as first-hand knowledge of the important work done every day by transit agencies such as CATS, and has attended several past SWTA conferences and events.

In this part-time position, Ms. Aitken will work with SWTA Executive Director Rich Sampson – who also works out of Baton Rouge – and Member Services Director Kary Hughes in ensuring SWTA members receive timely and valuable information from SWTA on activities, advocacy efforts, training programs and events happening across the SWTA Nation.

“It is my pleasure to announce that Alexandra Aitken will be joining the SWTA Staff as the new Communications Specialist,” says SWTA Chair Joel Gardner of Ozark Regional Transit in Springfield, Ark. “Alexandra comes highly recommended from CATS in Baton Rouge, and her professional expertise and skillset will compliment an already highly effective team. Please take a moment to welcome Alexandra to the SWTA Staff!”

Meanwhile, SWTA Executive Trainer & Consultant and previous Executive Director, Kristen Joyner, has been named as the Vice President of the Community Transportation Association of America (CTAA), a national membership association representing rural, small-urban, specialized and Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) providers nationwide. Ms. Joyner has represented the SWTA Nation on the CTAA Board since 2017. Currently, she serves an advocate for transit issues and conducts leadership training and certification programs for transportation professionals. From 2012 – 2016, she was a member of the White House Task Force for Transit Leaders. Recently, she spearheaded Operation Veterans in Public Transportation, a project that SWTA developed to acknowledge and support veterans in transportation.

“I would like to congratulate Kristen Joyner on her recent appointment as the Vice President of the Community Transportation Association of America,” says Gardner. “As we’ve known in the SWTA Nation for more than a decade, Kristen is a highly effective, passionate and professional advocate of public transit. CTAA has hit a grand slam with this appointment. To CTAA, I say “Solid Choice.”
