Deadline: BE the SOLUTION Awards
DEADLINE: February 1, 2018
We are reminding you about the connection between public transportation and human trafficking in America.
Transit has rolling billboards to educate the public and tailgate meetings to train the transit workforce. SWTA wants to know what your plans are to BE the SOLUTION. We want to celebrate your efforts at the Freedom Through Transit Conference in Denver, March 5-7. All efforts will be recognized but three transit providers and one business will be named the 2018 BE the SOLUTION winners.
You know SWTA is passionate about bringing awareness to the crime of human trafficking and giving hope to victims. We love celebrating the efforts of public transportation agencies as leaders in this fight because you can BE the SOLUTION.
So, get your thinking caps on. We have links to ideas and resources that are free or low cost, especially if you engage your community partners (one of the judging criteria). FYI: January 2018 is Human Trafficking Awareness month.

By the NUMBERS - sex trade focused:
Two million children are exploited into the sex trade, world-wide, every year. At least 100,000 AMERICAN children are being exploited through pornography or prostitution every year in the United States. (UNICEF, December 14, 2005)
- The top 5 recruitment sites for sex traffickers are malls, BUS STOPS, parks, playgrounds and schools. (Child Sex Trafficking at a Glance, Polaris Project)
- From a Polaris Project report: “One teenage girl was forced to bring in $500 per night, seven days a week. The trafficker had three other controlled females. Based on these numbers, it is estimated that the trafficker made $632,000 in one year from four young girls.”
- There is HOPE, the public responds in 2015:21,947 calls, 1535 webforms, 1275 emails and 1472 texts were generated reporting sex and labor trafficking events in the United States. (National Human Trafficking Resource Center)
