Valley Metro: Superintendent Rail Vehicle Maintenance


FLSA: Exempt position, not eligible for overtime compensation.

The Superintendent Rail Vehicle Maintenance is responsible for directing, planning, and implementing the maintenance and repair of Light Rail Vehicles (LRV) and Streetcars. Typical duties include: managing vehicle configuration through the modification approval process and updating maintenance procedures to reflect vehicle system changes; coordinating with Capital and Service Development, providing specifications, training and procedural requirements of new equipment and service contracts; ensuring the operational efficiency and work quality of Valley Metro’s maintenance, preventative maintenance inspections, and repair; developing and implementing policies and procedures; managing staff and resources; establishing standards and coordinating work activities with consultants/contractors; managing spare parts inventory and supplies.

*Normal working conditions for this position are in both an office and field setting. Job duties frequently require the necessity to work beyond normal office hours for emergency callouts, special events and evening, and weekend meetings.

Primary Duties

  • Supervises a staff of a 24 hours/7 day operation that includes: prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff is trained; ensuring employees follow policies and procedures; maintaining a healthy and safe working environment; and, making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations; responds to emergency calls 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.
  • Provides leadership and guidance for LRV maintenance program in Operations and Maintenance and staff; develops and monitors methods for providing support to Operations and Maintenance.
  • Establishes and directs preventative maintenance policies and procedures in order to provide a safe, reliable, clean and efficient system; develops recovery strategies.
  • Oversees safety, quality assurance, and rail vehicle preventative maintenance programs and schedules including production and equipment upgrades
  • Directs and monitors LRV projects and conducts contractor performance reviews, assists with coordination of contractual maintenance activities.
  • Directs the activities of the department, which includes planning, coordinating, administering, and evaluating programs, projects, processes, procedures, systems, standards, and/or service offerings; ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, codes, and/or standards.
  • Manages departmental goals, establishes appropriate services, staffing levels, and resource allocations.Develops a departmental budget; monitors and forecasts expenditures; recommends purchases of equipment; solicits and evaluates bids.
  • Serves as a liaison with internal departments, public agencies, external organizations, the general public, and/or other interested parties.
  • Familiar with and manages the processes related to warehousing and purchasing; requisitions; purchase orders, invoices, incoming material inspections and material returns.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Desired Education & Experience

  • Vocational training in electrical or electronic technology, and eight (8) years of experience related to heavy or light rail vehicle maintenance, including at least three (3) years of supervisory experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties such as those listed above.
  • Background Investigation: Employment is contingent upon the results of a background check.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Valid Arizona Driver's License and the ability to maintain insurability under Vehicle Insurance Policy.

Salary Range

   $91,974.00 to $137,961.00
